Exercise survey
Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), April 20, 2009
A SINGLE fitness session on an exercise cycle most days of the week can help save the lives of heart failure patients, it was claimed.
Researchers who studied 2,331 people with moderate to severe heart failure found patients who regularly exercised fared significantly better than those who did not.
Participants were assigned to an exercise group or an “usual care” group. Those in the exercise group learned to keep fit on a stationary gym cycle or treadmill, working up from three once-daily 30-minute sessions a week to five 40-minute arthritis pain relief sessions a week.
The study showed that exercise led to a significant 11% reduction in the risk of patients being admitted to hospital or dying.
The study was conducted at 82 sites in the US, Canada and France.
Investigators followed the progress of participants for an average of two-and-a-half years..
