A BURGLAR arrested at East Midlands airport after spending six years on the run was spared jail.
Colin Sweet, 31, was caught last month as he returned to the UK after starting a new life in Spain.
Lincoln Crown Court heard Sweet fled in 2004 after burgling a house in Coleridge Court, Coningsby.
Simon Rowe, prosecuting, said the owner returned from a short break to find her front door had been forced by an intruder.
More than Pounds 600 worth of property was missing, including a camcorder.
Mr Rowe added: “There was an empty packet of mini Kievs in the kitchen. A tin of tuna had also been opened but had been put back in the fridge with cling film on top of it.”
Sweet, who was living in Coningsby at the time, was linked to the burglary after trying to sell some of the stolen items. He was arrested and admitted the break-in but later failed to surrender to his bail. A warrant was issued and Sweet was arrested at East Midlands airport on January 4 this year.
Judge Jonathan Teare ordered Sweet to carry out 200 hours community punishment and pay Pounds 150 compensation
